Note: Seated on the low rise of a hillock a solitary figure surveys a gentle, rolling countryside. Long grasses bend in the breeze under a dynamic beryl sky animated with billowing cumulous clouds. Through the tall trees at the left a woman's parasol reflects the bright sunlight of a summer's day as her horse-drawn carriage rounds a bend in the road. Nearby, a man strolls leisurely on foot. With short, energetic brush strokes and vivid tonal nuances, Sisley captures the liveliness of changing light and weather effects characteristic of his landscape paintings 'en plein air'. Vigorous, wet-on-wet dashes of green and yellow suggest a golden afternoon light flickering across the foliage at the left, the rustle of leaves in the wind almost audible. Sisley's masterful application of paint in loose, circular strokes which rise diagonally from the horizon line gives the sky a tremendous sense of force and vitality.
