Portrait of Joseph (1741-1786) and his Brother John Gulston (1750-1764) (pastel (visual work); Francis Cotes (British, 1726 - 1770) (British Artist); 1754; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 99.PC.33)
Note: In this double portrait, the brothers Joseph and John Gulston are shown in half length and in close-up view standing before a wooded landscape prospect. The elder Joseph (age 13) is clothed in historicizing, seventeenth-century "Van Dyck" costume. His younger brother John (age 4) wears a contemporary dress, traditional for boys until they reached four years of age. John holds a wicker basket filled with colorful summer blossoms. In the portrait of Joseph and John Gulston Francis Cotes captures his sitters with disarming directness. Joseph bears himself gracefully and engages the viewer with his gaze, yet he still retains the fragile self-reserve typical of an older boy. However, his brother John, caught in three-quarter view, moves and smiles with the unselfconscious spontaneity of any four-year old. The contrast between the two boys' ages, clothing and actions indicates that the subject is more than a likeness of two children, but rather a commentary on the passage of childhood.
