The Sacrifice at Lystra (drawing (visual work); Pieter Coecke van Aelst (Flemish artist, 1502 - 1550); about 1529 - 1530; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 99.GA.7)
Note: The subject is taken from the 14th Chapter of the book of Acts. Paul and Barnabas preach the gospel in the city of Lystra. Among the listeners was a man cripple from birth, whom Paul healed (probably the vignette taking place at the far right of the drawing). Awe struck, the people began to worship them as pagan gods, calling Barnabas Jupiter and Paul Mercury (as stated in the drawing's inscription) because of his eloquence. The priest of Jupiter brought oxen and garlands to his temple in order to make sacrifices, but when Paul and Barnabas saw what was transpiring, they tore their cloths in fury and frustration. The focal point of the drawing is a magnificent columned temple housing a statue of Jupiter. Below, the priest and followers converge upon an ornately carved altar with sacrificial animals. At the right, Paul with an anguished expression strides towards them as he tears his robe, while Barnabas rushes dramatically to the right, with his arms outstretched in anger. The vignette to the left shows the ensuing event, when the people became inflamed against the apostles, stoning Paul and dragging him outside the city, supposing him to be dead.
