Sunrise (Marine) (oil painting (visual work); Claude Monet (French, 1840 - 1926) (French Artist); March or April 1873; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 98.PA.164)
Note: Monet depicts the bustling port of Le Havre on the northern coast of France in the early morning. A single small sailboat with two figures glides through the shimmering water as a rowboat passes behind. In the distance on the right through the haze can be discerned the masts of large clipper ships and, closer by on the left, pack boats with their chimneys billowing smoke and another clipper ship beyond. The iridescent blues and greens of water, smoke and damp air are lit up by the golden rising sun, which glimmers through the fog and industrial emissions and dances on the water. The ephemeral play of light, water and air would remain Monet's subject, regardless of the location, for the rest of his career.
