Fragmentary Oinochoe (oinochoe; Unknown Greek (Ptolemaic) (Greek (Ptolemaic) Artist); about 243 - 221 BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 96.AI.58)
Note: The oinochoe is not complete; it lacks its neck and mouth. Around the body is a scene of a woman standing between an altar and a pillar. Her body faces the viewer but her head is turned in profile to the viewer's left. She wears a chiton below a himation. Her hair is arranged in a melon coiffure, and the back of her head is covered by a veil that also drapes over her left shoulder. The channel in her hair above her forehead may once have been gilded to represent her tainia. In the crook of her arm rests a cornucopia. Behind the woman is a pillar, and before her a small altar, both decorated with garlands. Inscribed on the altar is "theôn euergetôn" - "of the benefactor gods", and above it, on the shoulder of the vase, "Berenikês Basilissês agathês tuchês" - "for the good fortune of queen Berenike." The woman pours a libation of wine from the phiale she holds in her right hand. The woman performing the ritual may be identified as the Ptolemaic Queen Berenike II (ca. 273-221 B.C.)
