They are Dying (drawing (visual work); Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish painter and d...; about 1825 - 1828; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 96.GB.9;)
Note: The drawing appears to have been made in two stages. Goya first appears to have drawn a seated man with clenched fists in a landscape, together with a kneeling companion to the right looking over his left shoulder at the viewer, and possibly the features of a further face in the dark shadow at the right. He inscribed the drawing "Se mueren..."(?) in the lower left. Next, he covered up two letters of this inscription with a basket and the fingers of the seated man were drawn; he now grasps an object which may be another basket. In the area of light shading to the right of the seated man's left shoulder a large face was drawn in and two further faces seem to be indicated faintly. They appear to be crowding around the basket, perhaps a basket of food. Poverty seems to be the subject of the drawing, with the title perhaps referring to death from hunger.
