Two Studies for a Holy Family (drawing (visual work); Parmigianino (Italian painter, 1503 - 1540); 1526; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 96.GB.317)
Note: The sheet contains two studies of the Holy Family, one drawn upside down from the other. The study sketched in at the bottom of the sheet is composed of what appears to be the figure of the Madonna seated on the ground holding her right breast with her left hand, with, to the right, a female attendant holding the Child. With the sheet turned the other way up, a variant of the same group appears, this time seemingly of the Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth and the infant Baptist. The exact identity of the figures in the two groups is by no means certain, and the seated figure in the first study could be an alternative for the figure of the Madonna, while the identification of the infant Saint John the Baptist in the second remains speculative.
