Note: Under a canopy of towering clouds a group of ships gather on the calm, mirrored waters of Flushing. On the right, a group of dignitaries is conveyed to the ships. Before them, a stately yacht, with sails unfurled, fires a salute in honor of the occasion. The porpoises gliding through the waters were native to Flushing, a busy port used by the Dutch East India Company during the time that Jan van de Cappelle painted this work.
