Two-handled Cup with Relief Decoration (cup (drinking vessel); Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 1st century; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 96.AM.57)
Note: Encircling this two-handled drinking cup is a scene that may be derived from Homer's "Odyssey." Odysseus was instructed by the sorceress Circe to travel to the Underworld to consult the blind seer Teiresias, the only one who could tell Odysseus when he would return home to Ithaca. On the cup, Odysseus holds aloft his sword and averts his eyes, having slain a ram to summon the ghost. There are seven other figures on the cup as well, all older men wearing cloaks. They may be the Seven Sages. The handles are decorated with foliate patterns on the tops of their shafts above the rim, and at their attachment plates to the body of the cup. The foot is decorated with a sharp fillet near the top, and with a beaded band and ovolo atop the footplate.
