Grave Stele of Phanokrates (stele; Unknown East Greek (East Greek Artist); about 200 BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 96.AA.50)
Note: The piece was a freestanding stele, probably set in an architectural frame. Its main figure is a draped youth. He stands with his left hand grasping the drapery on his hip and his right extended to touch a largish object too badly damaged to be identifiable, which is presented by a boy attendant, now missing except for his frontally seen head. The main figure wears, over a chiton, a long chlamys, the so-called epaphtis, secured on the right shoulder, then drawn over the left arm to be wound across the back and around the hips. An unusual ivy-leaf fibula holds the cloak together. The eagle-headed hilt of a sword emerges at the left side. The young man is beardless and short-haired. A wreath is carved in low relief on the background toward the viewer's right. Above the figures is a ledge with a number of objects shown in low relief. A plain block is possibly a closed diptych of wax writing tablets. A chest with an arched lid may have been used to hold book rolls. A framed tablet displays a wreath. The tablet is set upon a low block inscribed: Phanokrate[s?] [son of] Phanokrates.
