Note: The gladiator strides to the right with the cheek pieces or visor of his helmet closed to cover his face completely. His left arm is protected by a curved rectangular shield (scutum). His right arm is wrapped in straps (manica), and he holds a short sword. His waist is protected by a metal belt, under which is his loincloth (subligaculum). His thighs are protected with straps and his shins with greaves (ocreae). This figure wears the combined weaponry of a myrmillo (a type of gladiator of Gallic origin who had a fish as emblem) and a hoplomachus (shield fighter). | |
