Statue of a Muse (statue; Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); about 200; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 94.AA.22)
Note: This Muse is Polyhymnia, the Muse of mime. This Muse is represented as a young woman, standing in profile to the right. She leans forward slightly to rest her left arm on a rocky support, while her right hand is raised toward her chin in a pensive gesture. She wears a long robe (her sandaled right foot is just visible at its border) with an overmantle, the folds of which curve around her back and buttocks, enfolding her raised right arm and ending in a graceful fall over her shoulder. Her hair is drawn back in a ponytail, indicated by deeply carved loose curls. The statue is set on a low oval plinth with a concave profile. The quality of the carving, the scale of the figure, and the high surface polish suggest that the statue was carved at Aphrodisias, a leading sculptural center in Roman Asia Minor.
