Lakonian Black-Figure Kylix (kylix; Attributed to the Hunt Painter (Greek (Lakonian), active 565...; about 530 BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 87.AE.31)
Note: On the interior of this black-figure kylix, an eagle flies to the left clutching a snake in its talons and biting the snake's neck. This is likely a reference to a passage in Homer's "Iliad" in which the Trojans see an omen of an eagle carrying a snake. The snake bit the eagle, who was forced to drop the reptile into the midst of a battle between the Trojans and Greeks. On the exterior are a variety of ornamental friezes.
