La testa di Ade (sculpture (visual works); Unknown Greek (Sicilian) ; about 400 - 300 BCE; Museo archeologico di Aidone (Aidone, Enna province, Sicily,...; number not available)

Note: A hollow male head with long curly hair and beard. The head and part of the neck are preserved. Several of the separately attached curls are missing from the back of the head and beard. White slip is present on the face and curls. The face is idealized with a slightly down turned mouth with full, cupid bow lips and a curved nose. The eyes are rendered with deep incisions; the pupils are also incised. The curls were crafted separately and attached to the head. They are thick and doughy with spiral curls for the front of the head and for the beard; snail curls are used for the back and top of the head. Incised lines are used to delineate strands of hair for both the hair and the beard. Much of the polychromy remains: dark red for the hair; blue for the beard; and pink for the flesh. The head can be identified as Zeus, or (more likely) Hades. Research suggests that it is Sicilian, depicting Hades.
