Cameo Glass Flask (flask (bottle); Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 25 BCE - CE 25; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 85.AF.84)
Note: The figures encircling this flask may be part of a narrative from the life of the Egyptian god Horus, son of the goddess Isis. When Horus was killed by a scorpion's sting in Heliopolis, the sun-god, Aton-re, sent the god Thoth to restore Horus to life. The two youths depicted on the flask may be Horus. On one side, he holds a garland and worships Thoth, depicted as a baboon seated atop an altar. On the other side, he offers stalks of grain before an altar with a uraeus carved on its side, a reference to his mother Isis. Aton-Re stands behind the altar. He is shown as a pharoah holding a crooked staff and a vessel. The site of Heliopolis is indicated by the presence of a tree and an obelisk carved with hieroglyphs. The hieroglyphs are "nonsense-hieroglyphs" and have no meaning. A decorative rosette is carved on the flask's underside. An alternative interpretation of the iconography is that the obelisk in the scene refers to events in Rome, and the arrival of two obelisks from Heliopolis in 10 B.C. Alternatively, the imagery may simply be evocative of Egypt.Blown, cased (dip-overlay method, opaque white over translucent blue), carved, cut, ground, polished
