Mirror with Figures (mirror; Unknown (Etruscan artist); 3rd century BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 77.AC.100)
Note: The back of the mirror is decorated with four engraved figures, all are identified by inscriptions in the Etruscan language along the outer border. The two youthful male figures that frame the composition on either side, wear Phrygian caps, high-thonged sandals, a drape of fabric across the thighs, and a baldric from which a sword hangs. The youth on the right is identified as "menle" (Menelaus) and the figure on the left as "pru..the" (Prometheus). In between them stand two other figures. The nude frontal figure is identified as "talmithe" (Palamedes). He has billowing curls, and wears high-thonged sandals and a baldric with two spears. Slightly behind him is "mer...a" ( Minerva) wearing a Corinthian helmet and a long peplos with an overfold. Around the figural scene is a garland of spikey leaves tied with a ring or circlet at the top, bottom, and both sides. The lower part of the handle is missing.
