Throne (ceremonial chair; Unknown Greek (Greek Artist); 4th century BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 74.AA.12)
Note: Preserved is a throne with a high, curved back, and solid sides. Lion legs flank the front of the throne; above these are double volutes. A broad band runs from leg to leg around the back, this serves as the ground line for the scenes decorating either side of the marble seat. On the left side, in flat relief, is a depiction of Theseus killing the queen of the Amazons; he stands above the fallen queen about to strike a blow as she covers her head. The scene on the right side is a depiction of two nude swordsman about to attack; they are the "tyrant slayers", two Athenian aristocrats who tried to kill the two ruling sons of Peisistratos. On the back are two symmetrical olive-wreaths in low relief. An inscription is on the curve of the back of the throne. A large area is missing on the upper right side of the throne.
