Statue of a Collapsing Niobid (statue; Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 1st century; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 72.AA.126)
Note: The head and neck, raised right arm, and left arm and shoulder were made separately and attached with metal dowels as evidenced by the square dowel holes in these locations. All are now missing. Much of the upper chest has also broken off. The surviving sculpture depicts a male youth who has fallen on both knees upon a base rendered to look like small boulders. He is nude except for the drapery pinned under his right knee, covering his left buttock and wrapped around his left leg. The left leg and drapery are broken off below the knee. The youth's left hand is represented in the small of his back. Only three toes of the right foot, which was also attached by a dowel, remain. The back of the rocky base is carved roughly, but the backs of the youth and the drapery are finished.
