Fresco Fragment with Nilotic Landscape (fresco (painting); Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); about 70; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 72.AG.86)
Note: Painted on the fragment is a scene of the annual flooding of the Nile. A crocodile in the foreground moves through a stand of rushes toward a boat or raft being maneuvered by a pygmy. There is a palm tree and small thatched hut at the right. In the background there is illusionistic architecture that includes a temple, a colonnaded portico and a bridge with a tower. There are the remains of a red border at the top and bottom of the fragment, and an additional, darker stripe along the bottom edge may have been the frame of another scene below.
