Attic Black-Figure Neck Amphora (neck amphora; Near Medea Group (Greek (Attic), active 530 - 510 B.C.) (Gre...; about 510 BCE; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 71.AE.441)
Note: Side A: Two cuirassed warriors (Achilles and Ajax) playing a board game. Each sits on a square stool, leaning forward with spears in their left hands. Behind each man is their shield and crested Corinthian helmet. The warrior on the left prepares to pick up a game piece while the one on the right points two fingers of his right hand. Athena stands between the figures and behind the board table. She is represented in profile to the left, wearing the aegis and holding a spear in her right hand, her left hand upraised. White is used for Athena's skin, some of the game pieces, on Athena and the warriors' clothing, and for some of the details on the shields and helmets. Red is used for the men's beards, clothing, Athena's eye, and some details on the shields and helmets. Side B: A warrior between two older, bearded men. The soldier strides right and turn his head to the left. He wears a Corinthian helmet over his face, carrying a spear in his right hand and a large bi-lobed shield with a decorative lotus device in his left. The two old men flanking the soldier have receding hairlines, wear himatia, and carry staffs. White is employed for the lotus design on the shield, details of the helmet, and for the hair and beards of the old men. Red is used for himatia details and the edge of the shield.Other decoration consists of a palmette-lotus chain around the neck, a red-painted fillet at the transition from the neck to the shoulder and alternating red and black tongues around the shoulder which is interrupted on side A by the crest of Athena's helmet. Below the figured scenes is a simple meander band, upward pointing lotus buds and a ray pattern. The edge of the foot is reserved and the handle zones are decorated with upright palmettes with volute tendrils attached to three lotus budsGraffito underfoot: SO[?]
