Self-portrait (painting (visual work); Edgar Degas (French, 1834 - 1917) (French Artist); 1857 - 1858; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 95.GG.43)
Note: Degas made this self-portrait around 1857-58 during his youthful sojourn in Italy, when he was aged 23-24. He stayed mostly in Rome in 1857, and in August 1858 moved in with his relatives, the Bellellis, in Florence. The period was one of self-education, and he drew prolifically, writing in one of his notebooks, "I must thoroughly realize I know nothing at all; it is the only way to get ahead." In the proposed self-portrait, he wears casual clothes, including an open collar and broad brimmed hat. The unpretentiousness of the clothing is echoed by the informal, cropeed view of his face and by the artist's impassive expression. The far side of his face is illuminated by warm sunlight and is precisely modeled. By contrast, the near side is veiled by shadow, such that the beard and ear are adumbrated by flat areas of paint. This shadowing of the face may have been arrived at during the later evolution of the image, as suggested by the x-ray radiograph, which indicates that the entire face was originally strongly illuminated.
