The Duchess of Chaulnes as a Gardener in an Allée (drawing (visual work); Louis Carrogis de Carmontelle (French, 1717 - 1806) (French ...; 1771; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 94.GC.41)
Note: This is one of the many portraits that Carmontelle drew of the members of the court of the duc d'Orleans. Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1744-1781) was the daughter of the duc de Chevreuse and grand-daughter of the duc de Luynes. In 1758, at the age of 14, she married her cousin, Marie Joseph Louis D'Albert D'Ailly, the Vidame d'Amiens, who later became the duc de Picquigny and, in 1769, duc de Chaulmes. Her husband left for Egypt the day after the wedding and stayed there for several years. On his return he refused to see her and to consummate the marriage. Condemned to lifelong virginity, she invariably dressed in white, as seen in this rendering.
