Study for the Dress and the Hands of Madame Moitessier (preparatory studies; Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780 - 1867) (French ...; 1851; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 91.GG.79)
Note: The drawing shows the frontal, three-quarter length figure of Madame Moitessier as she would appear in the finished painting in the National Gallery, Washington. The artist has only lightly sketched in the head and shoulders, concentrating upon the brooch and the arms and dress from the bodice down. The position of the arms and hands are determined by a magnificent shawl of black Chantilly lace that is supported in the crook of the right arm and twines around the form, with the other end held by the left hand. Retained in the final painting, the shawl unifies the forms, lending them fluidity and breadth. In the painting, Mme Moitessier wears a smaller brooch and her right hand fondles a long length of pearls that echoes the fluid sweep of the shawl. In the upper right of the drawing, Ingres has drawn the left hand twice, experimenting with the positioning of the fingers.
