Note: Mammoth plate. Watkins often explored the ways in which lumber was used in mining. In the 1850s he probably provided lumber for building projects as a carpenter. His photographs of the elaborate wooden structures that were essential to the placer mining process were based on firsthand experience with the materials and an informed understanding of the delicate process of designing and building the structures.
