Arc de Triomphe (triumphal arch (memorial arch); Design by Jean François Thérèse Chalgrin (French ar...; 1806-1836; Paris (Île-de-France, France, Europe, World, Top of the T...; )
Note: Commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 to celebrate the military achievements of the French armies following his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, its design is influenced by triumphal arches from the Roman Empire. Construction was halted periodically, finally completing under Louis Philippe, King of France, who dedicated the arch to the armies of the French Revolution and the Empire.
