Nelson Monument (war memorial; designed by Robert Burn (Scottish architect, 1752-1815), add...; 1807-1815; Edinburgh (Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe, Worl...)
Note: A pentagonal castellated memorial commemorating Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson's victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. The monument sits on Calton Hill at 171 meters above sea level. In 1852, a zinc and timber sphere, later named the time ball, was added to the top of the structure. The ball was raised and lowered daily, clearly visible to ships moored in the Firth of Forth to assist in resetting chronometers for accurate navigation.
