Abbotsford House (country house; designed by William Atkinson, (British architect, ca. 1773-1...; constructed 1817-1819, 1822-18...; Melrose (Scottish Borders, Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe,...)
Note: Country residence of Sir Walter Scott. In 1811, Scott purchased the land with an existing farmhouse named Clartleyhole. He renamed the property Abbotsford after the ford across the adjacent river Tweed, which was used historically by monks of the neighboring Melrose Abbey. Scott initially built additions onto the house: a study, dining room, armoury, and conservatory (now demolished). The old farmhouse was later demolished to make room for a large rectangular building housing an entrance hall, new study, a library, and a drawing room. Further additions were made to the structure following Scott's death.
