Equestrian Statue of General Andrew Jackson (sculpture (visual works); Clark Mills (American, 1810-1883); erected in 1853; Washington (District of Columbia, United States, North and C...)
Note: In September 1845 the Jackson Monument Committee was established to raise the funds to erect an equestrian statue honoring Andrew Jackson. The statue was to emphasize Jackson’s military rather than political career. Self-taught sculptor Clark Mills was commissioned to create the Jackson equestrian statue in 1848. He made his casting in a temporary foundry on the Ellipse. He also cast here an equestrian statue of George Washington that stands at Washington Circle on Pennsylvania Avenue.
