Morgan Picture Bible (disassembled work; various scribes and illuminators; 1240s; Pierpont Morgan Library (New York City, New York state, Unit...)

Note: 43 folios. In addition to the folios at the Morgan, two folios are kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (MS nouv. acq. lat. 2294); another single folio is kept in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (MS 16). The Bible contains Old Testament miniatures, probably commissioned by Louis IX of France. The Bible later passed to the cardinal of Cracow, who then offered it as a diplomatic gift to the great Persian Muslim shah 'Abbas in the early seventeenth century. The manuscript eventually fell into the hands of Jewish owners, probably during the eighteenth century. These various owners left Latin, Persian, and Judeo-Persian inscriptions around the images.
