Bust of Emperor Caracalla (born 188, reigned A.D. 211 - 217) (sculpture (visual work); Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (Italian, 1716/1717 - 1799) (Italian Ar...; about 1750 - 1770; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 94.SA.46)
Note: The bust depicts Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (188-217 CE), nicknamed Caracalla, who ruled the Roman empire from 211 CE. until his assassination. He dons the garb of a soldier, a cuirass and toga which, like his other mature portraits, seems calculated to convey an image of soldierly toughness and determination. Characteristic of these portraits are the simple, compact volumes, strong turn of the head, furrowed brow, tense facial features rendered in high relief, and an almost scowling expression. Known from at least the sixteenth century, this portrait type was extremely popular with eighteenth-century collectors, who no doubt appreciated the intense psychological and historical asosciations evoked by the bust.
