Head of Christ (painting (visual work); Correggio (Antonio Allegri) (Italian, about 1489 - 1534) ; about 1525 - 1530; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 94.PB.74)
Note: Ecce Homo - 'Here is the man' refers to the New Testament account of the presentation of the scourged Christ to the people of Jerusalem. After his arrest, Roman soldiers lead Christ to Pilate who then instructed them to take him to the prison. There the soldiers stripped him of his clothes, dressed him in a purple cloak, placed a crown of thorns on his head and mocked him as the King of the Jews. Pilate, after finding no lawful reason to kill Christ, presented him to the people of Jerusalem dressed in the cloak and crown saying, "Ecce homo." The Jews, seeing Christ dressed as he was, cried to Pilate, "Crucify him!" (John 19:6). Correggio's rendering of the Ecce Homo shows Christ bleeding, wearing his crown of thorns, with the suggestion of a cloak around his shoulder. Though the subject of the Ecce Homo became popular in the early fifteenth century and was already well established by the date of this painting (ca. 1530), Correggio's rendering is haunting as it engages the viewer through the sorrowful eyes and captures the sense of divine martyrdom in the luminosity of the Christ figure.
