Irises (painting (visual work); Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890, active in France); 1889; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 90.PA.20)
Note: The Irises represents a patch of garden in the asylum at Saint-Remy, where van Gogh took refuge from May 1889 until May 1890 following his breakdown at Arles. During his first month at Saint-Remy he did not leave the grounds, but devoted himself to painting the sparsely planted garden, beginning with Irises. Rarely depicted in 19th-century Western art, irises had appeared in van Gogh's work first at the end of his stay in Arles as a minor element in a larger landscape.
