Stilleven met peren, mispels en een glas (easel painting (painting by form); Martinus Nellius; 1669 /1719; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); SK-A-1751; RM001.collect.4713)
Note: Little is known about this work's painter, Martinus Nellius. He worked in Leiden and The Hague in the late seventeenth century, producing modest still-life paintings that usually depict pieces of fruit, flowers or glassware. This still life typifies the intimate atmosphere of Nellius's work. Placed on the corner of a table are two quinces and their leaves, a couple of nuts and a piece of pomegranate. The brown fruit are medlars. In the background is a Venetian glass with red wine. The painting consists of brownish, shadowy areas with several colourful tones. The shadows shine through the top layer. The fruit is painted in the sfumato style, i.e. the colours shade into each other gradually. While the leaves are depicted very sharply, the rest is blurred.
