Grote polychrome balusterpot met musicerende dames (pot (container); unknown Chinese; ca. 1645/ca. 1660; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-NM-6462; RM001.collect.3172)

Note: A group of female musicians and a dancer can be seen on the front of the vase, watched, on the reverse, by a lady surrounded by her servants. The scene is depicted in cobalt blue glaze and colourful enamel on a porcelain base. The vase was made in China, during the turbulent years of transition when the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) made way for the Qing (1644-1912). The porcelain manufactured in this period of civil unrest was especially popular in Europe and was shipped to the West in massive quantities by the merchants of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Generally, however, the decoration was only in blue.

Additional Notes:

Dutch ..... Balustervormige pot op een iets inspringende, ongeglazuurde bodem en spreidende voet. Hoge hals met geprofileerde en bruin geglazuurde rand. Gedecoreerd in twee tinten onderglazuur blauw en verschillende emails: twee tinten groen, donker en licht ijzerrood, zwart en geel. De omtreklijnen van de beschildering zijn uitgevoerd in zwart email. Op één zijde een landschap met een dame en vier vrouwelijke bedienden, waarvan twee met grote waaiers. Op de andere zijde een terras met zes vrouwen die muziek maken en een danser. Een grote rots en een bananenplant sluiten de scène af. Op de schouder van de pot een band met een motief van gebroken ijs; rondom de hals rotsen en bloesemtakken. De deksel ontbreekt.
