applique (applique (applied ornament); unknown Thai; ca. 2000-ca. 1000 BCE; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-1318; RM001.collect.2217)
Note: This ornament was found in a grave in the north-east of Thailand. Two small rings are attached to the belly of the crocodile. These allowed the brooch to be attached to a garment. The maker of this ornament probably modelled this on a real crocodile. It must have been a captive animal, since its jaws are bound together. The brooch was made in the Late Period of the Ban Chiang Culture (300 BC - AD 200). This culture is named after the village of Ban Chiang where various excavations have revealed objects from this period.
