Halsketting (necklace; unknown East Javanese; 900/1000; Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands); AK-MAK-1307; RM001.collect.2018)
Note: This gold chain is made of sixteen parts, each in the form of a tiger's claw. Each claw is held in a mounting decorated with flowers, to which is attached a horizontal tube. A cord has been threaded through the tubes; the two hooks at either end which fasten the necklace are still present. Eight claws curve to the left and eight to the right, indicating that there must once have been a central piece. This type of chain was worn by young men or by deities depicted as youths. The precious material used and the high quality of the execution suggest that the chain's owner moved in court circles.
