Asterié (oil painting (visual work); Edward John Poynter (British painter, 1836-1919); 1904; Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Wellington, Welling...; 1960-0001-1)
Note: Horace’s verse and Poynter’s painting carry a message about the social importance of female chastity, which some commentators have suggested may have had special appeal to conservatives in early twentieth-century Britain. The protagonist, left at home in Greece while her husband is away in the service of the state, is being pursued by the god Zeus. As her would-be lover lurks restlessly in the street below, she looks out with an ambiguous air, allowing the viewer either to cluck piously about woman’s sensuality and weakness of character or to praise the reliably self-denying virtue of the good woman. Carnations, seen in a vase on the window shelf and in the woman’s hair, symbolise love and marital fidelity, playing up the moral question at the heart of the story: will Asterié prove virtuous or not? (Pamela Gerrish Nunn, 2009)
