Note: On 1655 date, see Petitjean: as the verses allude to the sitter's death, the portrait cannot have been engraved before 1652. Similarities in composition and dimensions between this plate and the portrait of Turenne, brother of Frédéric Maurice (P&W 218), the technique, and the name of the engraver spelled 'Nantueil' instead of 'Nanteuil', suggests a date of 1655; "Les cent voix de la Renommée...."--ten lines of verse inscribed on the pedestal; Title devised; The bust-length portrait of statesman and general La Tour d'Auvergne shows the sitter within an oval frame supported by a pedestal, with armor and sash. Publication: [ca. 1655].
