Note: Following the treaty of Leoben between Napoleon and Austria, the last doge of Venice was deposed on May 12, 1797, and Venice was later handed over to Austria; Commedia dell'arte figures dance around a pole topped by a liberty cap in the presence of French soldiers. A winged lion, the attribute of St. Mark and Venice, has fallen on his back; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*).
