Note: The print relates to the abolition of the octroi or tax levied on certain goods entering a town, voted by the National Assembly on February 19, 1791, and implemented in Paris on May 1st of the same year; Farmers bring cattle and casks through the town gate known as the Barrière de la Conférence, the Barrière de Passy or des Bonshommes, designed by Ledoux and erected along the city walls of the Ferme générale. A man brandishes a banner inscribed "Liberté," topped with a liberty cap; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*).
