Note: The Parisian printer Jacques-Louis Bance aîné lived during the Revolution on the rue St. Séverin at no. 25, then at no. 115. Around the year 1800, he moved rue Saint-Denis, no. 175; The print depicts the taking of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, by the French Guards of the royal army and the people of Paris; The crowds force through the first drawbridge, as the Governor of the Bastille, Bernard Jordan, Marquis de Launay, is arrested, and various buildings are lit on fire. A white flag appears atop the fortress; Forms part of: Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840 (Special Collections, accn. no. P980009*).
