[Abduction of Europa] (etching (print); Prud'hon, Pierre-Paul (etcher, 1758-1823), after a drawing b...; Published: 1700s; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 2656-467; 656467; accession number: 2004.PR.72*)
Note: The French painter, draftsman and printmaker Pierre-Paul Prud'hon won the Prix de Rome in 1784. As a pensionnaire in Rome from 1784 to 1788, he made drawings of antique sculptures and bas-reliefs; The print reproduces a drawing Prud'hon executed after an ancient bas relief at Palazzo Lancellotti when he was a pensionnaire in Rome. The bas-relief was sold to Napoleon by the Borghese and is now in the Louvre. The drawing, known as Néréide et taureau, also called L'enlèvement d'Europe (Sea nymph and bull) was in the collection of Franc̜ois-Martial Marcille (cf. Laveissière); The print reproduces the drawing in outline with only the head of Europa shaded, and is considered unfinished (cf. De Goncourt). Publication: [17--].
