Note: Title from pencil inscription in the lower margin; Signed within the image in the lower right; signed and dated in pencil in the lower margin; The etching is based on the artist's painting Christ's entry into Brussels in 1889 (J. Paul Getty Museum, 87.PA.96); Issued in reverse of the painting, the print records captions on banners that were later painted over in the original work of art. The biblical theme is set in late-nineteenth century Brussels during Carnival. One figure holds a banner with the slogan "VIVE ANSEELE / ET JESUS," associating Christ with one of the leaders of Belgian socialism, Edouard Anseele; Gift of Dr. Richard A. Simms.
