Venere gelosa (etchings (prints); Pierre Aveline the Elder (French printmaker, 1654-1722) ; Published: 1680s?; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 2609-987; 609987; accession number: 2003.PR.72*)
Note: The inscriptions on ten of the prints refer to the opera Venere gelosa, although only four document sets for this opera. The prints, signed "graué par Aveline" or "fait par Aveline", have traditionally been attributed to Pierre Aveline. W.-A. Weigert includes them in Pierre Aveline's catalog with reservations; Plate marks 21.8 x 32.2 cm. and smaller, on sheets 27.5 x 35 cm; Title from lettering on spine; The bound volume comprises 12 prints documenting sets designed by Giacomo Torelli for opera and ballet performances held in Venice and Paris. The etchings are based on earlier prints that illustrated the libretti or that were issued on the occasion of the performances; Four etchings are derived from prints issued in Apparati scenici per lo Teatro novissimo di Venetia nell anno 1644 (Venetia, 1644). They record sets designed by Torelli for the opera Venere gelosa that was performed at the Teatro novissimo in Venice in 1643. One etching, based on Nicolas Cochin's print published in Feste theatrali per La finta pazza, documents a set for the opera La finta pazza enacted at the Hôtel du Petit Bourbon in Paris in 1645. Six etchings are based on prints documenting the sets of the ballet Les noces de Pelée et de Thetis performed in the Hôtel du Petit Bourbon in Paris on April 14, 1654.
