[Assumption of the Virgin] (etching (print); Domenico Bonaveri (Italian engraver, born ca. 1640); Published: 1697; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 2581-247; 581247; accession number: 2002.PR.40*)
Note: In 1697, the Bolognese etcher Domenico Bonaveri dedicated a suite of fifteen etchings after Correggio to Marchese Francesco Maria Monti Bendini. Derived from drawings or prints by Giovanni Battista Vanni, the etchings were issued by Lunghi and document Correggio's Assumption of the Virgin frescoes in the cupola of the Duomo of Parma; The bound volume comprises the complete suite of etchings by Bonaveri after the frescoes of Correggio in the Duomo of Parma (plate marks ca. 39.6 x 53.6 cm. and smaller). Detailed representations are given of the apostles and ephebes from the decoration of the drum of the cupola [pl. 5-12], and of the Virgin Mary and Eve amidst musical angels and clouds [pl. 13-14]. The patron saints of Parma from the squinches of the dome are reproduced in plates [15-18]: John the Baptist, Bernard, Bishop Hilary of Poitiers, and the Apostle Thomas; Plates [1-3] are etchings by Michel Corneille (plate marks 52.2 x 28.4 cm. and smaller) depicting the Massacre of Innocents (pl. [1-2]) and Noli me tangere (pl. [3]). They bear the address of the publisher Nicolò Billy and reproduce in reverse tapestry sketches designed by Raphael for a series of the Life of Christ that was commissioned by King Francis I in 1519; Binding: full vellum. Watermark. Publication: 1697.
