Achilles's life (etchings (prints); Baron, Bernard (printmaker, 1696-1762), possibly from prepar...; Published: 1724; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 2574-043; 574043; accession number: 2002.PR.34*)
Note: During his stay in London from 1712 to 1729, Bernard Baron etched The life of Achilles that Peter Paul Rubens had likely designed for his father-in-law, the tapestry merchant Daniel Fourment. Baron may have used preparatory paintings executed by his collaborator Du Bosc as models for this suite of etchings, rather than the original oil sketches by Rubens; The suite comprises eight prints depicting the life of Achilles and a title page dedicated to the royal physician Richard Mead, who had acquired Rubens's oil sketches. The title page shows Fame, accompanied by Athena, unveiling an oval portrait of Rubens; Contents: Achilles dip't in Styx --; Achilles instructed --; Achilles discovered --; Achilles armed --; Achilles angry --; Achilles reconciled --; Achilles revenging --; Achilles slain. Publication: [London] : Sold by Tho. Bowles printseller, in St. Pauls Church Yard, London, [1724].
