[Hell] (engraving (print); Epifanio d'Alfiano (Italian monk and printmaker, active 1591...; Published: ca. 1592; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1575-281; 552002; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 205))
Note: Bastiano de' Rossi, chief secretary of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, described the interludes by Giovanni de' Bardi in Descrizione dell'apparato e degl'intermedi ... (In Firenze : Per Anton Padouani, M.D.LXXXIX [1589]); The print depicts the fourth intermezzo of the comedy La pellegrina performed in the Teatro mediceo degli Uffizi on the evening of May 2, 1589, as part of the festivities honoring the wedding of Ferdinand I de' Medici to Princess Christine of Lorraine; The engraving records Bernardo Buontalenti's stage design for the intermezzo. It is composed of a fiery, rocky and cavernous landscape and, in the background, a cityscape. The giant Lucifer rises from the flames, devouring a soul, as he reaches his arms out grabbing at other souls. The sorceress Maga appears in the sky in a dragon-drawn chariot. Eighteen heavenly figures watch the spectacle, seated on clouds in a semicircle. The engraver's name is inscribed in capital letters on a chariot's wheel; Trimmed along the right margin, with loss of plate mark; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).. [ca. 1592] (34501/publishers)
