[Musical contest of the Muses and the Pierides] (engraving (print); Epifanio d'Alfiano (Italian monk and printmaker, active 1591...; Published: 1592; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1574-859; 551616; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 203a))
Note: Bastiano de' Rossi, chief secretary of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, described Giovanni de' Bardi's six intermezzi for La Pellegrina in: Descrizione dell'apparato e degl'intermedi ... (In Firenze : Per Anton Padouani, M.D.LXXXIX [1589]); A related pen and ink wash drawing by Bernardo Buontalenti is preserved in: London, Victoria and Albert Museum, no. E.1187-1931; The print depicts the second intermezzo of the comedy La pellegrina performed in the Teatro mediceo degli Uffizi on the evening of May 2, 1589, as part of the festivities honoring the wedding of Ferdinand I de' Medici to Princess Christine of Lorraine; Issued three years after the festivities, it records Bernardo Buontalenti's stage design for the second intermezzo enacting the musical contest between the Muses and the Pierides (cf. Ovid, Metamorphoses, V). The stage setting is composed of two architectural grottoes, a trellised arbor decorated with caryatids and a hilly landscape in the background. The Muses and Pierides are seated in grottoes, singing, reading a musical score, playing the flute or the cello. Apollo and the Hamadryads, judges of the contest, sit on a rocky mount. Around the mount wander birds or magpies, into which the Pierides were transformed after losing the contest; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**); Trimmed in the right margin, with partial loss of plate mark.1592. (34501/publishers)
