[The coronation of the Virgin] (woodcut (print); Jegher, Christoffel (Flemish designer and woodcutter, baptiz...; Published: 1633; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1567-221; 544753; accession number: 2000.PR.43**)
Note: Title from: Mary L. Myers. Rubens and the woodcuts of Christoffel Jegher; Statements of responsibility appear beneath the image in the lower margin of the print. On the left: P.P. Rub. delin. & excud. On the right: Christoffel Iegher. Sc. The privilege statement appears in the middle: CVM PRIVILEGIIS. The initials "C.I." and a tiny image of a woodcutter's knife are printed in the lower left part of the image; A reproductive print after a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens. According to Thieme-Becker, this print is one of nine large woodcuts, which Jegher executed after Rubens, who also closely supervised the printing process. Thieme-Becker lists this print as "Krönung der Maria", and notes that several of the nine large woodcuts include Rubens's address as draftsman and a privilege statement. After Rubens's death, Jegher removed Rubens's address and signed the woodcuts "Christoffel Jegher sculp. et excud." (cf. Wurzbach). According to Le Blanc and Hollstein, this print represents state I, with Rubens's address in the lower margin. State II has Rubens's name removed (cf. Hollstein). Hollstein records provenance history between 1899 to 1929 for both states. Basan records a print with Rubens's address present; The source for this woodcut comes from Peter Paul Rubens's ceiling paintings in the Church of St. Charles Borromeo in Antwerp. Rubens painted two compositions: The Coronation of the Virgin and The Temptation of Christ. The paintings were ordered in 1630. The completed composition was destroyed when the church burned in 1768, and is known only through surviving oil sketches and engravings. It is likely that Jegher used the oil sketches as models for the woodcuts rather than the paintings (cf. Myers). Both woodcuts, The Coronation of Virgin Mary and The Temptation of Christ, were probably planned by Rubens as pendants (cf. Myers) and were printed in 1633 at the Plantin Press in Antwerp. Bouchery and Wijngaert cite both prints as Maria's Kroning and Kristus' Verzoeking and refer to Plantin Press' inventory numbers 314-311; The print depicts the Virgin Mary, elevated on clouds and crowned by the Trinity. To her left appears the God figure, holding orb and scepter in his left hand, and supporting the crown over Virgin Mary's head with his right hand. To her right, the figure of Christ ascends the clouds and supports the crown with both hands. Above the Virgin Mary is the Holy Spirit symbolized by a dove. The figures are severely foreshortened. They appear in reverse order as in the oil sketch, now at the Louvre (cf. Martin), and without the angelic heads between the clouds beneath the Virgin Mary; Printmaker and printer of German origin, active in Antwerp, known mainly for his large woodcuts after Peter Paul Rubens; also for his woodcut vignettes and initials in books printed by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp. Jegher was a regular employee of the Platin Press from 1625 to 1640 (cf. Voet); The print has two references to bibliographic sources pencilled in on verso. It also bears a printer's crease in the upper left, a vertical crease in the middle, and two small stains in the image near the right border. Publication: [1633].
