[Assumption of the Virgin] (engraving (print); Jan Witdoeck (Flemish printmaker, print publisher, ca.1615-a...; Published: 1639; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1553-521; 532567; accession number: 2000.PR.4**)
Note: Title from Hollstein; Statement of responsibility and date are engraved below the image in the lower left corner: P.P. Rubens pinxit / H. Witdouc sculpsit Ao 1639; Privilege statement is engraved below the image, in the lower right corner: Cum priuilegiis Regis Christianissimi / Principum Belgarum et Ord. Batauiae; State I according to Bodart (cf. Rubens e l'incisione). Schneevoogt lists four prints executed by various artists after Rubens's painting of the Assumption for the Carthusian church in Brussels: H. Witdoeck, [Adrian] Huberti, Corn[elis] van Merlen, and N. [sic, i.e. François] Ragot. Schneevoogt records a state with the privilege statement abbreviated as "C. P. R. C.", to which Bodart refers as state II. Basan records a state with the privilege statement abbreviated as "C. P. R. C. P. B. & O. C."; The print is numbered in ink "133", in the lower right corner on recto; A reproductive print by Jan Witdoek after a drawing, possibly done by the engraver himself and corrected by Rubens (cf. Reznicek). Held suggests that the drawing reproduces, in reverse, an altar painting of the Assumption by Rubens. The painting, executed between 1637 and 1638, was intended for the main altar of the Carthusian church in Brussels, and is now in the Liechtenstein Collection in Vaduz; Witdoek's drawing is in the Uffizi. Differences in detail and composition between the painting and variant oil sketches are described by Held; The print depicts the theme of the Assumption in form of a multi-level composition and follows the basic iconography of the theme. The Virgin is shown in the upper part of the image, supported by angels in a cluster of clouds, ascending from her open sarcophagus, around which the Apostles stand looking on in amazement; Flemish draftsman, engraver and print publisher; known for his reproductive work after Rubens.1639.
